As startups begin to look beyond their own websites and diversify their selling options, some choose Target as their main traditional retailer, while others flock to Nordstrom, all in hopes of attracting a very specific type of customer.

But the pure reach, convenience, and customer service army of Amazon make it the obvious choice for many startups. Some companies, like Casper, are actually available on all three shopping sites, in addition to its own, an aggressive strategy that surely improves its brand exposure. 

Starting off on Amazon is a great stepping stone to more exposure and customers because the majority of online shoppers are already on Amazon. If they can shop interesting new products alongside the familiar brands and supplies they’re buying anyway, they will.

$5 billion hedge fund LMR Partners poached Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s top equity derivatives boss in the US

  • The US head of equity derivatives at Bank of America Merrill Lynch quit this week after less than two years at the bank. 
  • He’s headed to LMR Partners, a $5 billion hedge-fund launched in 2009 and run by ex-UBS traders. 

Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s top equity derivatives boss in the Americas is leaving after less than two years, and he’s headed for hedge-fund LMR Partners.

After an eight-year run with Barclays, William "Bill" Hillegass joined BAML in 2017, heading up equity client solutions and running equity derivatives out of New York.  

He quit the firm, Business Insider reported this week, and he’s joining LMR Partners, a multi-strategy fund founded and run by ex-UBS traders Ben Levine and Stefan Renold, according to people familiar with the matter.

Hillegass, LMR Partners, and Bank of America declined to comment.

Hillegass may have crossed paths with Levine and Renold at UBS, where he started his career in 2003. He left for Lehman Brothers in 2007 just before the financial crisis, followed by his run at Barclays, according to his LinkedIn profile.

LMR, which was founded in 2009 and has offices in Hong Kong, London, and New York, manages more than $5 billion in assets, according to its website.  

A private-equity fund run by Goldman Sachs’ Asset Management bought a minority stake in hedge fund last year, according to Reuters. 

Hillegass will manage portfolio out of the New York office, the people said. 

He’s is one of a slew of sell-side equity derivatives traders to switch posts in the past year amid a rebound in the business and a war for talent.

A classic cardigan has saved me many a time from being woefully underdressed — really, it is a wonder that I don’t carry one with me everywhere I go. Keys, check; cellphone, check; cardigan, double check.

Capable of bridging the gap between work and weekend clothes, the perfect cardigan is a closet staple worth stockpiling. After all, in addition to keeping you sharply dressed, it also helps keep you warm in frigid office environments. When it comes to picking out your perfect cardigan, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, you’ll want to consider the fit. While some cardigans make slouchy look elegant, others are slightly more buttoned up, and could almost pass for a less structured blazer. You should also think about whether or not you want your cardigan to be of the buttoned variety — I’ve found that some of my favorite cardigans look perfectly sleek even kept open. Depending on the formality of your environment, you may want to adjust your standards for the ideal cardigan.

Also important to keep in mind is the material of your cardigan. Wool probably won’t work as well in warmer environments, while a thin cotton won’t do much to keep you cozy in the winter. While some cardigans are made with heavier materials, others look as wispy and delicate as a spring day.

Of course, you’ll also want to think about your preferred color scheme. Whether you prefer to maintain an all-black wardrobe or add some accent pieces, a cardigan can match your aesthetic, whatever it may be.

Finally, you’ll want to keep price points in mind. Cardigans are not, in fact, blazers, and as such probably shouldn’t cost you quite as much. In fact, you can get a perfectly decent piece for under $20, especially when shopping at some of our favorite places.

Why you’ll love them: LOFT’s cardigans have withstood the test of time thanks to their comfortable materials, durable construction, and classic aesthetic.

You always knew that you would turn into your mother, but as it turns out, that’s nothing at all to be afraid or ashamed of. Not only have you inherited your mother’s smarts and looks, but you’ve also inherited her fashion sense. And that sense will likely lead you straight to LOFT.

Though the brand has been around since 1954 (LOFT is one of the subsidiaries of Ann Taylor), don’t assume that its relatively mature age means that it’s lost touch with modern fashion. Ultimately, what I love best about LOFT is its extensive selection when it comes to cardigans. Once upon a time, my closet consisted of just a couple nearly identical black button-up sweaters that I figured would do the trick for any occasion. LOFT, however, showed me otherwise. In fact, if you narrow your search down to just cardigans on the company website, you’ll return 62 total results, none of which are particularly similar to one another.

Why you’ll love it: Everlane’s cardigan collection is chic, minimalistic, but oh so cozy.

It’s been nine years since Everlane was founded, and in that time, the e-commerce brand has managed to make its way into what seems like every millennial’s professional and casual wardrobe. And with pieces like its cardigans, it’s really not very difficult to see why.

Everlane is absolutely unmatched in making the simple look sleek. Even without the help of bold colors or prints or off-the-wall cuts, Everlane still manages to exude a timeless elegance in all of its pieces. That’s thanks in part to its generous use of cashmere, which certainly lends a sense of grace to its sweaters and cardigans.

Take, for example, the Cashmere Square V-Neck Cardigan. I love the oversized fit and the v-neck that is deep enough for intrigue but still office appropriate. Plus, with its square pockets, it’s supremely functional as well. While you could easily take this cardigan with you on a windy beach day, you could also wear it to the workplace without feeling too casual.

Everlane certainly does the boxy, oversized look better than most, but its fitted options are beautiful as well. I’m a huge fan of the Luxe Wool Rib Cardigan. It’s relatively lightweight (though made from merino wool), and has a slim fit that looks fantastic tucked into a pair of jeans or slacks.

Why you’ll love it: Forever 21 is here to prove that you can buy a cardigan for less than $20.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I have more than a couple Forever 21 pieces hanging in my closet, and surprisingly enough, the ones that have lasted the longest have been my cardigans. When it comes to your basic, everyday cardigan selection, this teen-focused brand is actually a great place to start your search.

From color-blocked to cropped; from long and flowy to warm and chunky, Forever 21 certainly has one of the wider selections of cardigans both online and in-stores. Because this brand caters toward a younger customer base, you’ll also be pleased to find that all of these styles are remarkably affordable.

You can find a number of cardigans, like the Slub Knit Longline Cardigan, for less than $20, and there’s even a style or two for about $11. I’ve found that in-stores, I’ve been able to grab cardigans for as cheap as $9.90 — while they’re not revolutionary in their design or craftsmanship, they certainly get the job done when pulled over a camisole and a nice skirt.

The millennial clientele of Forever 21 may also appreciate the looser interpretation of "cardigan." Take, for example, the Ornate Print Kimono, a lovely flowy number that would work well as a bathing suit cover-up or as a boho-chic summer look. The Sheer Floral Longline Cardigan is another unique option, what with its light fabric and its flowery pattern.

But just because Forever 21 has a few more creative options on its list doesn’t mean that it’s pushed traditional styles to the wayside. The Solid Draped Cardigan is just $12 and is a simple yet chic open cardigan that looks fantastic on top of a pair of dress pants.

Kim Kardashian is suing fast-fashion brand Missguided for $10 million, alleging that the company ripped off her outfit hours after she posted it on Instagram

  • Kim Kardashian West is suing Missguided and seeking $10 million in damages, alleging the fast-fashion brand replicated the image of an outfit she posted on Instagram
  • "Missguided systematically uses the names and images of Kardashian and other celebrities to advertise and spark interest in its website and clothing," the complaint reads.
  • In addition to a recent Instagram knockoff, the complaint cites other posts and images on Missguided’s website as part of its argument that the brand is unlawfully using the reality star’s name and likeness to sell clothes. 

Kim Kardashian West is going after Missguided as the reality star and fashion icon attacks fast-fashion knockoffs. 

On Wednesday, Kardashian West and her corporation, Kimsaprincess Inc., filed a lawsuit against Missguided in the US District Court for the Central District of California, alleging that the fast-fashion brand’s "unlawful misappropriation" of Kardashian West’s persona is central to its marketing and sales strategy. 

"Like other ‘fast fashion’ companies, Missguided … has become notorious for ‘knocking off’ the clothing worn by celebrities like Kardashian," the complaint reads.

"But Missguided does not merely replicate the looks of these celebrities as seen on red carpets, in paparazzi photos, and in social media posts," it continues. "Missguided systematically uses the names and images of Kardashian and other celebrities to advertise and spark interest in its website and clothing." 

The complaint claims that Missguided’s unauthorized use of Kardashian West’s trademarked name and likeness is illegal. Kardashian West is seeking $10 million in damages.

The lawsuit stems from an incident related to a now-deleted Instagram post that Missguided shared earlier in February. Hours after Kardashian West posted a photo of herself in a golden outfit, Missguided posted a photo of an outfit that appeared to be a direct knockoff of the look. 

"The devil works hard but Missguided works harder," Missguided captioned the now-deleted Instagram post.

In the court filing, Kardashian West lists a number of other times that her image or name has been used by Missguided in social media posts and on its website without her permission.

The complaint cites a section of the site called "Crushin’ on Kim K.," which features an option to "Shop Kim K." As of Friday, clicking the "Shop Kim K." button directs shoppers to a page with the message: "sorry, we can’t find the page you’re looking for." 

The complaint also lists instances in which Kardashian West’s photos have been featured on Missguided’s Instagram page, including a meme that includes a photo of Kardashian West and her husband, Kanye West.

A recent conspiracy theory that Kardashian West is in cahoots with Missguided and other fast-fashion brands is also included in the complaint. 

"Missguided has so systematically misappropriated Kardashian’s name and likeness that the consuming public is likely to and has come to the mistaken conclusion that she is affiliated with Missguided and is working hand in hand with the company to create ‘fast fashion’ versions of her clothing," the complaint states. 

While the complaint is centered on Missguided, the conspiracy has linked Kardashian West to other fast-fashion brands as well. Earlier this week, a Fashion Nova knockoff of a vintage gown Kardashian West wore over the weekend sparked questions.

"Missguided shoppers know the score — We’re about the look, without the celeb bucks," the company said in a statement to Business Insider. "For the record, as much as we love her style, we’re not working with Kim on anything."

Representatives for Kardashian West did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

Fashion does not have the same level of protection as things such as art, literature, and film, Christiane Campbell, a partner at the Duane Morris law firm, previously told Business Insider. This allows fast-fashion brands such as Fashion Nova, Zara, and Forever 21 to quickly churn out similar, less-expensive items.

However, in this case, it is not a fashion designer who is pursuing legal action. Instead, Kardashian West is citing laws related to her own rights of publicity and the Kim Kardashian West trademark.

Alibaba-backed Hello could take on ride-hailing giant Didi (BABA)

Hello TransTech, a Chinese mobility startup backed by Ant Financial, Alibaba’s financial services arm, announced that it’ll launch a car-pooling service in mainland China on February 22, according to TechCrunch.

The company has been piloting the car-pooling service, which enables users to book a ride in a shared vehicle via an app — similar to "pooling" options of traditional ride-hailing services, with several consumers — for about a month. Hello originally launched as a bike-sharing service in China back in 2016, securing its initial investment from Ant Financial in late 2017.

Hello has an opportunity to steal significant market share from embattled Chinese ride-hailing leader Didi Chuxing, given its series of missteps and Alibaba’s massive user base.

  • Didi Chuxing’s struggles have opened up space for an alternative. Last year Didi witnessed a pair of its drivers kill passengers, prompting it to temporarily cease operating its services. A slew of regulatory changes around background checks resulted, putting a further clamp on Didi’s business and reportedly causing a shortage of ride-hailing drivers and cars in China overall. Last week Didi reported annual lossesof $1.6 billion in 2018, and announced plans to reorganize its workforce slightly thereafter. Ride-hailing and ride-sharing aren’t direct substitutes, but given the reported shortage and Didi’s difficult year, Hello’s ride-sharing service could be a viable alternative.
  • Hello has a unique advantage in mobility — Alibaba’s ecosystem of services is massive and immensely popular in China. Alibaba is one of the largest online retailers in the world, posting $15 billion in retail revenue last quarter alone, most of which came from mainland China. Its broader ecosystem is even more massive — Alipay counts 1 billion users globally and about 700 million in China alone — or about half the country’s total population.

Hello and Alibaba would be wise to offer discounts and incentives if they want to pounce on the opportunity presented by Didi’s mishaps. Despite the embattled leader’s issues and Alibaba’s size, outcompeting Didi won’t be easy: It still controls 90% of China’s ride-hailing market and counts 550 million users.

Hello and Alibaba would be wise to strike soon, while Didi is ironing out its own struggles, to try and quickly drive use. Half the battle may already be done: Hello is integrated with the Alipay app, meaning 1 billion users automatically have the car-pooling service available on their smartphones. The trick will be converting that base into active users of the car-pooling service.

The companies could drive use by way of promotions, with Alibaba offering frequent customers discounts on Hello rides, for instance, or by creating a monthly subscription bundle for both mobility and retail sales. While Hello and Alibaba may not overtake Didi as the market leader immediately — over ever — they have a rare chance to win away a significant share of users from an overwhelmingly dominant player.

How DC Universe’s ‘Doom Patrol’ brought its bizarre superhero team from the comics to TV

  • DC Universe’s "Doom Patrol" showrunner Jeremy Carver talked to Business Insider about bringing the weirdness of the comic book to the screen.
  • "There was that element of weirdness and absurdity, but I was really taken by the pathos and heart beneath it all," Carver said.
  • He added that the show had to have "equal or more weight" on the characters and their backstories as on the bizarre nature of the show.

To say that DC’s Doom Patrol is an unconventional superhero team is an understatement. Think Marvel’s X-Men, but even more outlandish (and they actually pre-date the X-Men in the comic books). And now, the team is starring in its own TV series, "Doom Patrol," which premiered on DC Universe’s streaming service last week.

"Once you accept the fact that they’re not your typical superheroes and they are folks who see what’s special about them as a curse, you begin to see the possibilities for emotional development," series showrunner Jeremy Carver told Business Insider.

The show’s team includes Robotman (played by Brendan Fraser), who is basically a brain within a metal, robotic body; Elastigirl (April Bowlby), who turns into a giant blob when she loses control of her emotions; Larry Trainor (Matt Bomer), who can unleash a being of negative energy from his body, called Negative Man; Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), who has dozens of split personalities, each with their own superpower; Cyborg (Joivan Wade), half-man, half-machine; and the Chief (Timothy Dalton), the scientist who brings this band of outcasts together and gives them a home.

Then there’s Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk), the team’s fourth-wall breaking nemesis who can drain the sanity from his victims.

"Doom Patrol" is the third straight original series on DC Universe to gain critical acclaim since the service’s launch in September. It has a 93% on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and new episodes premiere every Friday.

"The series is refreshingly self-aware, both in the hilarious meta narration by Alan Tudyk as the team’s archenemy Mr. Nobody and in its more fundamental understanding that if you make a show about these characters, you’d best come weird or not come at all," Rolling Stone’s Alan Sepinwall wrote.

So how did such a strange series successfully jump from the comic-book pages to the small screen? Carver said that there’s a lot of depth underneath the strangeness.

So what I wanted to bring to it was all of those things about the comics — the pathos and the absurdity — and find a way to tell that in a mature manner that services the vision that DC Universe has, which is to tell these types of stories for a more mature audience."

"You had to have equal if not more weight on the characters and their backstories," Carver added. 

Apart from the story possibilities with the characters, "Doom Patrol" also benefits from being on a streaming service, especially one that caters specifically to DC fans. When DC Universe launched last year, it was labeled "the ultimate DC membership."

"Doom Patrol" characters aren’t as widely popular as other DC superheroes like Batman and Superman, and the comics have become more and more eccentric over the years. Writer Grant Morrison’s run is considered one of the essential eras in the team’s history by fans, and heightened its far-out nature. To successfully adapt "Doom Patrol," traditional TV wouldn’t have worked.

"We can tell stories that aren’t nearly as neat as they’re sometimes told on networks, and we can play a lot with structure," Carver said. "We’re not bound by the same need to constantly reset and keep people up to speed like in a network show where you’re constantly resetting the plot and making sure even the casual viewer isn’t left behind. When you’re talking about a streaming service, there’s not as much need for handholding. You’re putting a lot of trust back in the fanbase."

Samsung’s new $2,000 folding smartphone has one bizarre, glaring flaw

With each year, smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung are pushing phone screens closer and closer to the edge — literally. The removal of smartphone bezels has become an industry-wide goal across the last few years.

It’s Apple’s fault, as you might already suspect.

Apple’s iPhone X introduced everyone to the concept of a smartphone "notch" as a trade-off for a phone with a nearly wall-to-wall screen. Almost every other smartphone maker has followed suit since, from Google to Samsung.

Look no further than Samsung’s new smartphone, the Galaxy S10, for an idea of how Apple’s iPhone X design has pushed the entire smartphone industry toward a so-called "all glass" phone interface:

Which is why one particularly bizarre design choice stood out so much when, on Wednesday, I first saw Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, the $1,980 folding smartphone/tablet that Samsung is also launching this year. 

That the device folds is obviously remarkable. A folding screen! That’s some "Jetsons"-style futuristic magic right there:

After that initial novelty wore off, however, something else really stood out: the smartphone’s front screen.

Given that the device is still primarily a smartphone, it’s striking how bizarrely small the screen is at 4.6 inches. Even more striking, perhaps, are the two absolutely massive black bars on the top and bottom of that tiny screen:

Are there technical reasons for these large gaps? Almost certainly. Price considerations, given the already high price of the device? Assuredly. 

The Galaxy Fold is, more or less, an entirely new product category, so we’re in uncharted territory here. There could be any number of reasons for the large gaps above and below the smartphone’s screen.

That said, anyone switching from a standard, modern smartphone to the Galaxy Fold will need to consider the trade-off: losing about a full inch of screen real estate in exchange for a folding phone.

We’ve asked Samsung representatives for a statement on the screen design, but have yet to hear back.

These are the key differences between Samsung’s new Galaxy S10 phones that are worth noting before you buy

Samsung announced five new smartphones during its Unpacked event on February 20, and we’re here to point out the differences between three of them: the Galaxy S10e, the Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10 Plus. 

Those are the phones you can pre-order right now before they hit stores on March 8. The other two phones, the Galaxy S10 5G and the Galaxy Fold, won’t be available to buy for another few months. 

The Galaxy S10 phones might all share the "S10" badge, but they each have slightly varying sets of features and design — with prices that reflect those differences — that you should be aware of before you click the pre-order button.

  • The House of Representatives will take its first step to try to block President Trump’s national emergency declaration to build his wall along the US-Mexico border.
  • Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas has offered a resolution to terminate the emergency declaration.
  • The bill will receive a vote on the House floor on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON — Congress will take its first step to try to block President Trump’s national emergency declaration to build additional physical barriers along the United States border with Mexico on Tuesday. 

The resolution, put forth by Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas, would terminate the national emergency declaration, but faces significant hurdles if it is to be as successful as Democrats hope.

During a phone call with reporters, Castro said he filed the resolution Friday morning.

"What the president is attempting is an unconstitutional power grab. He has throughout his presidency sought to undermine the judiciary, and now the legislative branches of government," he said. "This is an historic power grab and it will require historic unity by members of Congress — Republican and Democrat, liberal and conservative — to counteract the president’s parasitic movement."

Castro said he and his staff began crafting the resolution in advance of Trump’s decision as the threat loomed during the record-long 35-day partial government shutdown gripped Washington.

"My staff and I began working with legislative counsel to figure out the best way to make sure that Congress can take a vote on this issue and potentially terminate the declaration," Castro said. "[The resolution] is the product of those six weeks of work."

The resolution has 226 cosponsors, all of whom are Democrats, with the exception of Republican Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan.

Castro said courting Republicans has been a slow process, partly due to Congress being out of session since Trump made the emergency declaration. Castro also noted that he has sent letters to GOP offices appealing to Republican members to join his cause.

"So this isn’t a situation where we’ve just been courting one side," Castro said.

Whether or not more Republicans will get on board with the resolution is unclear, as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has stated his colleagues will not stand in the way of Trump’s decision, nor do they question his legal authority to divert appropriated funds to build a border wall.

In terms of a timeline, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the House Rules Committee will take up the resolution on Monday, which will receive a vote on the floor on Tuesday.

"I believe letters to Republicans is out of respect for their patriotism. I know they care about the Constitution and the United States. I know they care about separation of powers and the coequal nature of the branches of government," Pelosi told reporters. "So it’s out of respect — out of their respect for the Constitution that we invite them to join. What’s really important is how they will vote."

Under Armour’s CEO was reportedly grilled by the company’s board over his relationship with an MSNBC anchor (UA)

  • Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank has maintained a close relationship with MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle over the past few years, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.
  • According to The Journal, Plank often turned to Ruhle for business advice. Sources said that in some cases, her advice overruled that of other employees. 
  • The board reportedly stepped in at one point after uncovered emails indicated that Plank and Ruhle could have been having a more intimate relationship. The board questioned whether Plank had used company assets.

According to the Journal, Plank turned to Ruhle for business advice, and she flew on the company’s private jet. In some cases, her advice overruled that of other employees, sources told the newspaper. 

The board reportedly stepped in at one point after emails were uncovered indicating that the duo may have been having a more intimate relationship.

Under Armour and Stephanie Ruhle did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment. MSNBC declined to comment. 

The board reportedly asked Plank about the nature of their relationship and whether he was using company assets. Plank told directors that no company funds were spent, the Journal wrote. But sources said that Ruhle would often fly on the company’s private jet, which costs over $160,000 a month to lease.

"Ms. Ruhle flew with Mr. Plank and Under Armour staff to or from Cannes, Amsterdam and Austin, Texas. On trips from Cannes in 2015 and 2016, the plane stopped in Teterboro, N.J., and dropped off Ms. Ruhle, according to these people and flight records," the Journal wrote.

A spokesperson for Under Armour told the Journal that other executives also disembarked at this location and that it is common for Plank to bring family and friends on business trips, as there is no extra cost for additional passengers.
